Michael began his career as the evening news graphics artist at NewsChannel6 in Richmond, Virginia after graduating with an arts degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. The affiliate executives recognized his talent and enthusiasm for branding and provided him an opportunity to redesign the station’s on-air, off-air and news sets. The redesign’s success garnered Michael a promotion to Art Director where he lead his graphics and edit team to win multiple Emmy awards.
In 1999 Michael made the move to New York City to join the award winning design studio, The Diecks Group as their Creative Director. While cultivating the company’s talent, he also made it a priority to teach graduate students at Parson’s School of Design and mentor young students in the AIGA Mentoring Program.
Michael’s commitment to young talent and fresh ideas lead him to co-found nailgun* in 2003. Under his direction, the studio conceptualized and executed award-winning campaigns for network and commercial clients.
Michael’s network career has come full circle and in 2011 he became the Vice President, Creative Director of On-Air and Off-Air for TV Land. He has led his team to a network rebrand which included redesigning the original logo that the network had for 15 years. He believes in giving back and continues to teach and mentor young design talent and provide them the opportunity that was afforded to him when he began in the design world. His professional honors include awards from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (Emmys), the Type Directors Club, PROMAX/BDA, the New York Festivals, Graphic Design USA and ID magazine.
